Pop culture trends, when examined closely, often reveal a subtle distortion of reality. Reality confession cams and Benetton clothing advertisements, while representing opposite ends of a spectrum of intent and form, magnify and amplify the relationship between the viewer and subject. I am interested in wedding the emotional drama that typifies many video confessionals and the often stark visual drama used in fashion advertising; both, in their own way, simultaneously personal and impersonal. Why people tend to feel comfortable when placed alone with a camera and how they express themselves without feeling judged.
As a self-portrait that reflects pop culture trends and a distortion of reality, I am exploring the relationship between my thoughts and actions. Through this video, I am confronting my own deep insecurities and my inability to verbalize everyday thoughts. It is an attempt to embrace and give voice to my own constant fear.
